Oundle double up on Cooks

A quirk in the fixture computer saw both our sides up against sides from Oundle.

The first team travelled to the very picturesque Oundle to play Oundle II’s who are top of division 7. Again Dan lost the toss and again we had to bat first.

But Dan 87 and Gareth 40 put on 137 for the first wicket giving Cogenhoe a great platform . Liam Knight with 50 no continued his good form  but the wickets tumbled as Cogenhoe chased a large total. Cogenhoe ended up on 219-9 from their 45 overs slightly disappointing but that total was the first 200+ total against Oundle this season and the highest Oundle II’s had conceded in almost 2 seasons. The Cogenhoe attack was weakened by having no Alex Harvey-Jones or Gareth Tompkins in it but the game went right down to the wire with Oundle getting home in the 42 nd over to win by 3 wickets. With a third of the season gone Cogenhoe are in fitfth place just 2 points off a promotion place with a game in hand so there is everything to play for. Dan get practicing that toss calling!!!!

The seconds hosted unbeaten Oundle III’s at Compton Park and having lost the toss were also asked to bat. Matt Golby with 25 got Cogenhoe off to a decent start but 2 quick wickets put Cogenhoe on the back foot. Three more quick wickets followed with Adam Lee-Brown falling to a superb one handed low slip catch saw Cogenhoe on 79-5 with young Ashley Davis and the not so young Tony Bird at the crease  with 19 overs left.  15 years old Ashley then batted with a maturity beyond his years, encouraged and supported by Tony. Ashley’s strokeplay, defensive shots and his leaves were a joy to watch and everyone watching from the Cogenhoe side was delighted to see his patience and skilled rewarded with a superb 51 no. Those of us who have been  lucky enough to witness Ashley’s progress over the past 3 years could not have been happier. Tony with 26 no shared an unbeaten stand of 73 with Ashley as Cogenhoe ended their 45 overs on 152-5.

Adam Lee-Brown who bowled superbly (12-1-39-1) struck in his first over and when Tony Bird bowled the new man in Oundle were 7-2 and then 25-3. But despite a great effort in the field the two experienced Oundle batsmen guided their side home to victory also in the 42 nd over for a 7 wicket win.

Despite the two defeats our club can take great heart from two promising performances against two very decent sides from Oundle. The rest of the season gives us much to look forward too.
