vs. Burton Latimer
Two weeks ago the Cooks fell agonisingly short in a run chase at Burton Latimer. After restricting Burton Latimer to a modest total of 143 for 9 after their 45 overs. This included personal best figures of 13-6-7-20 by Nick Lester. Some days everything happens all at once with Nick also featuring in the other Cooks wickets with a catch and a run out.
Fletcher Callaghan (27) and Matt Morrissey (35) gave the Cooks a solid platform to go on and win the game, however a middle order collapse left cooks needing 40 with two wickets remaining. 23 more were required when the 10th wicket partnership began, when Nick was then bowled off a no ball (when your luck is in, it’s in!) the cooks needed just 3, it looked like the Cooks would scrape home the win. However Burton Latimer held there nerve to wrap up the win by two runs, in a great spirited game of cricket.
vs. East Haddon
Keen to bounce back the following week at home against East Haddon, Cogenhoe batted first, with new opening partnership of regular opener Captain Gareth Goddard, and Matt Morrissey standing in for Dan McLaughlin who had to sacrifice his spot as opener due to work commitments. Matt, feeling good after a hunt around the ‘Next’ sale and a McDonalds breakfast, clearly wasn’t feeling superstitious today as he tempted fate by declaring before the game he was going to score a ton! Remarkably what followed was exactly that, Matt’s century was a superb chanceless innings. He wasn’t given a life, the runs flowed crisply off the middle of his bat, he was part of three 50+ Partnerships with Gareth, Dan and Henry, and when with 15 overs the rate needed to kick on he hit two towering sixes in one over as he continued on his merry way to his maiden Cogenhoe Century.
Matts 119 not out made him the 18th man to score a century for the club (forgive me @CogenhoeCCStats if I have got that wrong). Needing a formidable 218 to win the game East Haddon were never really in the chase, and with 18 overs to go Cogenhoe needed just two wickets to wrap up the win, however some fine blocking from Ian Hardwick and impressive youngster Sam Yates frustrated Cogenhoe’s attack with the Cooks having to settle for 18 points and a winning draw.
