U11s v St Crispin’s Ryelands B
Sunday 7th June 2015
A fantastic weekend for Cogenhoe CC was rounded off yesterday by the first win of the season [and the first win for several seasons] by the U11s.
With no sign of the opposition 10mins before the official start time, the lads were left wondering if they would actually get a game, but when they did turn up expecting a 10.30am start, the lads were ready to get stuck in.
Having lost the toss and being asked to bat, the change in the batting order worked a treat as Sam Tipler and Jake Morrissey put on 28 runs in the first 4 overs to get us off to a great start. This was followed up by 27 runs from Spencer Smith and Aidan Garratt, 30 runs from George Thompson and Alex Price and 36 runs from the last pair of Keelan Hone and Liam Morrissey. All this for the loss of no wickets, which was especially pleasing, as they set St Crispin’s 122 to win.
The boys were now scenting their first victory, IF they could keep the number of wides down and maybe take two or three wickets.
With the first ball of the St Crispin’s innings, Keelan Hone struck, bowling the opener all ends up and completing a wicket maiden. The supporters and coach were all now beginning to believe a maiden victory could be on the cards.
As it turned out, victory was achieved by a landslide 85 runs, as the boys restricted their opponents to 76-8, a net score of 36. Keelan finished with 3-3 off his three fantastic overs and there were wickets for Liam [1-16], Alex [2-6] and Jake [1-7], with Jake also running someone out with a direct hit. Sam [0-8], Aidan [0-17] and Spencer [0-10] all bowled well without taking a wicket. Special mention to Aidan and Alex who worked so hard on their bowling on Friday night and took it into the game, Alex not conceding a run off the bat and Aidan bowling not one wide!
On the developmental side, the fielding was a little loose with a number of misfields, a couple of dropped catches and there is work to do on the backing up, but we are going to worry about that at practice and enjoy the win. The batting and bowling collectively was brilliant and they should all be very proud of themselves.
With former juniors Josh Bastow and Tom ‘Smokey’ Robinson hitting the winning runs for the 1st and 2nd Teams respectively on Saturday and good performances from Will Tipler, Harvey Westall and Alfie Wreford for the midweek side, it looks like the future is bright for the club.
Once again, thanks to Sid for scoring, Allan for umpiring and the parents for coping with the change of venue and time. The next match is on Sunday 14th June at Grange Park [due to the car boot sale at Cogenhoe].
