Match Report: Under 9’s vs. Wollaston

~Friday 15th May 2015~

The U9s travelled to Wollaston for one of our regular Kwik Cricket friendly matches. These games are now something of a local derby now, as this will be the fifth time we have played them in the last couple of seasons. As it stood, there were two wins apiece, with both sides confident of taking the lead in the series.

Having won the toss [tails never fails] and putting Wollaston in to bat, Cogenhoe soon had Wollaston reeling on minus-15 with wickets for Aidan Garratt and Prasil Chauhan, with Liam Morrissey snaring three catches at mid-wicket.

Tight bowling from the two girls [Niamh Garratt and Louisa Kingsbury] kept on the pressure, especially as the lively wicket was offering plenty of bounce. The second half of the innings saw some of the old habits creep in again, as the wide tally grew and allowed the Wollaston batsmen to score a number of boundaries.

During the interval, the match was in the balance and the opening pair of Niamh and Louisa got us off to a good start, Louisa hitting a number of leg-side fours. The next pair of Ben Robinson and Thomas Redmond batted sensibly, but the target was beginning to get harder and wickets began to tumble as the boys tried to keep up with the run rate. Debutant Mikey Smith did well with the bat and hit his first runs for the club. The last pair of Prasil and Liam were facing a big challenge to score enough to win and unfortunately Wollaston won comfortably in the end.

Some really good cricket from the team, with a special mention for Louisa Kingsbury on her debut, having recently joined the club from Wellingborough, she looks a sure-fire starter for the U11s very soon.

Thanks to Jason for scoring, to Wollaston CC for their hospitality and to the parents for getting the children to the ground. A good night was enjoyed by those that could stay and a return fixture is being lined up, with our friends down at Wollaston.
