Chalk and Cheese for Cooks

Cogenhoe managed to produce two performances yesterday that came from either end of the spectrum with the seconds producing a superb display whilst the first team gave a performance that had us all scratching our heads.

The first team visited Yelvertoft and Dan ………….well you know the rest and we were duly put into bat. Whilst there is much banter surrounding the losing of the toss it is something I believe is having more of an effect than we are letting on.The wicket at Yelvertoft was low and slow a surface we dislike and I genuinely feel that the coin toss and wicket just took the wind out of our sails before a ball was bowled. To add insult to injury ex Cogenhoe player Callum Bentley produced two cracking balls to account for Dan and Gareth and whilst almost everyone got into double figures no one pushed on and 139 all out was never going to be enough. Nick Lester did provide some much needed levity when he went out to bat. With Chairman Roy Quennell a last minute call up for the unwell Matty Irons , Nick was promoted to number 10 in the order. Such was Nick’s excitement at his lofty batting position he strolled out to the middle minus a bat !

The Yelvertoft reply was quickly in trouble at 7-2 but in all honesty chasing such a small total meant that calm heads and a far to generous amount of wides from the Cooks attack saw the total gradually rise and in the end the home side were very comfortable winners by 7 wickets. The first team are a most talented bunch but we have no devine right to win any game. What we need to do is get back to basics, line and lenght bowling, sensible batting and plenty of support in the field. If we start doing that from next week I have every confidence we could end up having a very good season.

The return of Skipper Ryan Knight saw yet another superb performance by the second team to make it 4 wins out of 5. Ryan won the toss and put Weldon II’s into bat and to quote DP they batted like they had a train to catch. But despite the healthy run rate the Cooks bowlers kept plugging away with Syd Mason 13-2-40-3 producing a lovely spell of bowling. Ashley was back in the groove with 3-13 with Matt Golby 3-43 and Adam Lee-Brown with 2 wickets the others bowlers doing the damage.

Confidence among the seconds is very high at the moment and Russ Coleman 28 and Matt 30 got Cogenhoe off to a great start. Ryan with a patient 32 no carried on the good work along with a lovely 33 from Ashley, 14 from Matt Morrissey and with Jason 8 no the Cooks finished the job off in the 35 over to win by 6 wickets. Tougher tests are ahead for the seconds with a visit to high flying Old next week but as I said before confidence is high and that plays a big part in this funny old game.
