Bowlers rescue Firsts

On a bright but windy afternoon at Compton Park visitors Yelvertoft won the toss a elected to field on what everyone thought was another belting wicket.

But Cogenhoe were soon in trouble losing Dan McLaughlin and Liam Knight  with just 21 on the scoreboard. Wayne Gardner with 30 was the mainstay of the innings with Ryan Knight 24 and Mark Bird also with 24 providing valuable support but some fine catching by Yelvertoft allied with Cogenhoe’s far to positive batting saw the hosts bowled out for just 110 in the 33 rd over leaving Yelvertoft with 57 overs to chase down 111. P Brown with an excellent spell of 13-2-35-6 was the pick of the Yelvertoft attack.

The Yelvertoft reply was soon in trouble with a needless run out courtesy of Ryan  and another wicket shattering clean bowled by Alex Harvey-Jones leaving them on 4-2. With only a ten man side the Cooks bowlers were now getting very interested. Yelvertoft recovered to 35-2 but when Eccles fell to a catch at point by Wayne from Alex the floodgates opened. Jason Kruger’s two LBW’s in two balls had the visitors reeling and the introduction of Gareth Tompkins did nothing to ease the pressure as the bowlers turned the screw even tighter as the visitors were eventually dismissed for 73, with Yelvertofts P Brown stranded on 20 no. Credit to the Cooks for an excellent bowling performance with Jason 13-1-33-3, Alex 9-3-28-3 and Gareth 5.5-3-4-2 the men taking the wickets which was backed up by some excellent fielding. This victory was the Cooks first of the season but it was far from satisfactory. For the second time this season the Cooks failed to bat out their allotted 45 overs and it could have cost them again were it not for some excellent bowling. When the batters learn to get their heads down and grind out some runs when we are in trouble then this team will cause any side in this division problems. Yesterday was a great result but a far from great performance.
