U11s v Old Northamptonian’s A Sunday 5th July 2015
The Cook’s U11s made the short trip to Billing Road to take on the usually formidable ONs ‘A’, after a week off due to the weather. Ever-present George Thompson was absent, with Hrishi Dave taking the wicket-keeping duties.
Skipper Jake Morrissey won the toss again and invited ONs to bat on a warm but overcast morning, the crowds flocking in to watch the local derby. Keelan Hone’s first over went unrewarded as both Alex Price and Spencer Smith put down good chances. The purchase of the new catching net will be put to good use, as ‘catches win matches’!
Keelan and Liam Morrissey bowled the first 4 overs taking a wicket apiece and leaving ONs at 18-2, a net score of 8, which was promising at the quarter mark. Hrishi was also displaying some great hands behind the stumps.
At this point though, the extras began to soar and the team collectively finished with 16 wides and 6 no-balls, and an overall 54 extras. There were examples of good fielding, with Keelan snaring a catch at mid-on, Jake with a direct hit run out and some good chasing, with wickets for Keelan, Liam, Alex and Spencer. However, with two batsman scoring 27 and 19 runs, the Cooks had dug themselves into a hole, having to chase 96 to win.
The opening pair of Sam and Jake got off to a positive start, losing no wickets and with over 20 runs on the board, optimism began to rise. Sam’s hook shot for 4 was excellent, especially as it may well have taken his head off if he had missed it! Unfortunately, the other pairs couldn’t get any real momentum against an accurate ONs attack and with the loss of four wickets, Cogenhoe finished on a net score of 39, and a 56 run defeat.
It was a good effort against one of the stronger sides in the league, especially as in previous years, the margin of defeat would have been much greater. Every player contributed with bat or ball or in the field. A few lucky players also managed to get a selfie or autograph with Northants and England’s David Willey who was present.
As coach, the highlight of my day was the comment from ON’s coach. He said that the team were a credit to the club, they were a lovely group of boys who all supported each other and encouraged the bowlers who were bowling several wides [rather than moan at them]. He also said we should be proud that we let all the players bowl their overs, even when they are bowling wides as that is how they learn, other clubs would take them off.
Once again, thanks to Sid for scoring and Allan for umpiring, plus Chairman Roy for the sweetie bags that were handed out at the end. We look forward to returning to Billing Road next Sunday to take on ON’s B team.
