The Cooks travelled to Higham Ferrers for their penultimate league game of the 2014 season. On a green track, the hosts won the toss and elected to bowl. Luck seemed to be with the Cogenhoe batsman as the score of 94 for 1 at drinks did not show the number of times chances were dropped, batsman played and missed off the opening bowling of N.Bonsor and T. Imripan . After drinks the second wicket partnership worth 61 was broken when Matt Morrissey now batting with a runner following a leg injury, was bowled by J.Chettle for 40. After a brief innings from the skipper Ryan Knight, opener Russ Coleman showing great resolution was joined by Mark Bird. Their partnership yielded 41 runs at a furious rate, when Coleman just one run short of his half century was dropped then promptly run out by the same fielder. Bird continued to attack the bowling, especially enjoying the short boundary at the tennis court side of the ground. Although the wickets began to fall Bird stayed steadfast and scored a deserved fifty. Four Cogenhoe wickets at the end of their innings with Higham bowler M.Owen taking 2 wickets in successive balls, his first wickets in senior cricket. The innings ended with Bird unbeaten on 62, leaving 10 man Higham to chase 227 to win on a wicket that would surely help the Cooks seam attack.
In reply Higham soon lost opener Imripan trapped leg before by Chris Mason. The second and third wicket stands added useful runs, but when Renjit became the first of Matt Irons three victims which triggered a Higham batting collapse from where there was no return. When the seventh wicket fell, that of opener D. Wisher for a defiant 31 it was only a matter of time before the Cooks claimed victory. One bright spot for Higham in the final overs of the game was the batting of young D. Owen who showed maturity beyond his years when facing Irons and M.Bird, until he was bowled by Bird. The last two batsman stayed for another five overs until proceedings were wrapped up by A. Findley, to give the Cooks a hard fought victory.
This victory proved to be vital, as news eventually reached the Cogenhoe that fourth place Weldon had been defeated, to seal promotion for the Cooks for the second successive year.
