On Sunday 20th July, Cogenhoe U9s were entered in a 20 team tournament at Wollaston CC, operating under the usual Kwik Cricket rules where everybody bats, bowls and fields.
The Cooks Juniors were in the same group as Wollaston, Wellingborough and Old Northamptonians ‘A’.
The first game was against the hosts and saw a very good bowling and fielding display leave us chasing a modest total to win. Unfortunately, confidence seemed to be lacking and too few runs were scored, leading to a defeat by 22 runs. A bit of a disappointment given we have beaten Wollaston twice before.
The second game saw a massive improvement, as after winning the toss and fielding first, the boys and girls restricted Wellingborough to 24-5 a net score of minus 1. The batting effort was fantastic as everyone contributed to a large total of 72-1 [net 67], meaning a win by 68 runs. High fives and fist pumps all round, plus a few cakes and sweets from the hamper!
Having seen ONs ‘A’ heavily defeat both Wollaston and Wellingborough, there were a few nerves before we played them, especially when many of the ONs pace attack seemed to be running in from just outside Strixton!
However, although the team lost, they took several wickets and restricted ONs to their lowest total within the group and scored the most against them on the day. It was probably their best performance and I felt they gave ONs a real fright into the bargain.
The squad of nine should be proud, they all contributed and left the Cogenhoe spectators happy [they were probably the loudest supporters at the tournament] and even a 20 minute storm didn’t dampen the spirits too much. Overall, Northampton Saints beat the County U11 girl’s team in the final.
My thanks to Tom ‘Smokey’ Robinson for scoring, Gareth Goddard for umpiring and for Jason Roberts for turning up and sharing his wisdom with the team.
