The 2014 cricket season began for Cogenhoe CC 1st XI at home to Isham 2nds at an even windier than normal Compton Park.
CCC won the toss and were delighted to ask Isham to bat first. Runs were exceptionally hard to come by early on with Kruger and Harvey-Jones bowling their usual economical opening spells leaving the visitors struggling at 21-3 after 15 overs.
Ashby and Lester then joined the attack, and wickets continued to tumble, When Ashby eventually removed Isham opener J Lyon for 26 Cogenhoe, would have thought at drinks surely no one could be doing better than having the opposition 31 for 5 at drinks. They’d have been wrong, with the news CCC 2nd XI had Burton Latimer in even deeper trouble at 36-6 at their drinks break.
After drinks with Ashby wind assisted bowling possibly the fastest spell of his career and Lester the other end just happy the ball could reach the other end bowling in to a gail (which even flipped the sight screen over), wickets tumbled faster than the runs column seeing Isham ‘blown away’ for 36 in just 27.3 overs. A stunning bowling and fielding performance headlined by Ashby’s 7-5-4-4.
The chase didn’t take long with Mclaughlin in his usual free scoring fashion notching up a brisk 25 not out. Goddard even joined in on the attack bludgeoning a 4 UP the hill despite an untypically slow outfield (#BigGuns) in his 6. Cogenhoe reached their target after 7 overs, which led to post match Tea and celebrations. No finer way to start the season! #COYC

The fastest spell of my career?? I’ll have you know I was like sh*t off a shovel in my youth! 🙂
