After last weeks disappointment with the basics in all areas letting us down the message this week in the pre-match team talk was all about keeping things simple and focusing on the basics.
Anya lost the toss and we were put into bat on the artificial wicket on a glorious sunny morning. The opening pair of Prashil and Archie went into bat with calling, backing up and positivity the order of the day.
Prashil took the first ball on the glove then hitting him on the helmet as the extra bounce in the artificial wicket took hold. We feared the worst on the sidelines. However Prashil responded with a lovely straight drive for 3 and we were on our way to the highest number of runs scored off the bat for 2 seasons! Prashil with a seasons best 14 not out from 17 balls and 2 4’s and Archie with a 4 of his own had us 229-1 of the 1st 4 overs.
Anya and Mikey were pair number 2 and after Anya suffered a nasty blow on the thigh the pair did well to stay in positive figures. They were out 3 times between them but Mikey finished in positive figures and Anya hit a fine cut shot for 4. A brave performance.
Then came Mohit and Niamh. The pair have had a good season together and today was the highlight. Mohit 16 not out with 3 4’s and Niamh 13 not out with 2 4’s and we were 282-4 with 4 overs to go. Mohit performances with bat and ball have really improved this year and another fine knock confirmed that improvement once again.
Aidan and Will were our final pair with the same message as the all the pairs and 300 a hopeful target. The bowling tightened and Will missed a straight one but good running and a 9 not out with 1 4 from Aidan saw us get to exactly 300. Only the 2nd time in 2 seasons and 71 off the bat our highest for 2 yrs.
The break brought lots of positivity and smiling faces from the team.
Keeping focus on the simple hints we talked about walking in, backing up and concentrating hard throughout our time in the field. Mohit and Prashil got us off to a good start taking a wicket a piece in their 1st over each. 230-2 after 4 overs and the game was on.
Then came a pivotal 5 overs. Anya had a shot played off her bowling that could have been an easy 2 for the batsmen but Niamh swooped in the field, span and threw into Anya who removed the bails for a great run out. Just what was asked for in the field and great to see the girls combining their skills together. Niamh took a wicket (bowled) in her next over for our 4th wicket in 9 overs and finished with 1 for 4 from 2 overs. Adding to her 13 runs with the bat this was easily Niamh’s best day for Cogenhoe. Then came the best over I have seen from a junior this year. Archie delivered a 3 wicket maiden over and could have easily taken another 3. Each ball superbly delivered on line and length with Mikey taking the 3 that didn’t hit the stumps. After 10 overs St Crispins were 255 for 7 and the team could almost taste victory. Anya then took a wicket (bowled) in the next over and in Archie’s 2nd over it was Anya’s turn to make a great pick up in the field, take 2 steps towards the stumps and throw down the stumps from 10yards out making it 7 wickets in 5 overs. A fine fielding display. St Crispins and Ryelands final pair batted really well and a few nerves kicked in with the bowling with victory in site but we held on for a 12 run victory.
A superb all round performance from all involved today and shows that focusing hard on the basics makes the world of difference to the performance and result. Well done all and keep the focus on the basics for the last few games.
Thanks to Charlie as ever for umpiring and supporting the kids out on the field, George for scoring and the travelling supporters for their consistent support and encouragement.
