JUNIOR COOKS UNABLE TO SECURE A HAT-TRICK

U11s v Horton House Sunday 21st June 2015

The Cooks made the short trip to Horton for the local derby on the back of two consecutive wins, confident of avoiding the 100-run trouncing received at Horton last season. Spencer Smith and Liam Morrissey returned to the team, replacing Hrishi Dave and Oliver Woolley.

Horton won the toss and invited Cogenhoe to bat [once the fox poo was cleared from the bowler’s run up]. Keelan and Liam batted well throughout against an accurate opening bowling attack, putting on 10 runs without loss.

Spencer and Anya Neal were the next pair in and played some nice shots, but with tight fielding and three late wickets, the Cooks were in trouble with a net score of minus 2. Aidan and George were next in and again struggled to score runs against the accurate Horton attack. Another two wickets were lost and no runs from the bat meant the last pair needed to try and set a defendable total.

Both Sam and Jake hit lovely fours in a valiant attempt to increase the run rate, but with six wickets lost for only 40 runs, a final net score of 10 runs was a long way short of what we required.

After the fairy cakes, biscuits and squash, the Cooks took to the field knowing they had to take wickets and field well to have any chance. There were wickets for Keelan, Sam and Liam, but unfortunately, Horton didn’t need to score too many from the bat as the number of wides and byes soared and saw Horton finish on 55-3, a net score of 40 and an overall 30-run victory.

This was probably the most disappointing performance of the season so far, given the improvements over the last two games. As we approach the halfway point of the season, I am really pleased with all the efforts so far and we won’t get too disheartened with this loss, but we need to practice extra hard for the rest of the season so we don’t turn in a similarly lacklustre display again.

Once again, thanks to Sid for scoring and John Tipler for umpiring, plus Gareth and Paul for operating the electronic scoreboard!
